Luther Blackwell
New Haven, CT

Luther unique talents as educator, instrumentalist, conductor, vocal coach, song writer.

I'm into cool stuff like making videos, helping with school, and saving important parts of our culture. I've done a bunch of awesome things that have made a big impact in the world of arts and learning. I work as a video person for Connecticut Schools, thanks to President Obama's idea called Arts and Humanities TurnAround Arts Initiative. Basically, I use cameras to tell stories that make learning more fun. I've captured how art can really change students' lives, making them feel more creative and powerful. Back in 2003, a musical I put together called "Marginal Saints" won a big prize at the New York International Fringe Festival. It was a cool moment where I showed how good I am at creating interesting stories on stage. I also made a documentary about the football legend Jim Brown, called "Jim Brown UNPLUGGED," using my skills in making films and telling stories. I'm also in charge of helping out DJ Tony Crush, who's the Founder and part of The Legendary Cold Crush Brothers. DJ Crush has been inducted into the Smithsonian African American History and Culture as one of the Pioneer of Hip-Hop Music. It's a big deal, and it shows how I care about keeping the legacy of important artists alive. I'm a super creative songwriter and have made more than 400 songs and music for shows in Off-Broadway. I've even worked with famous conductors such as: the late and great Leonard Bernstein of the New York Philharmonic, Seji Osawa of the Boston Symphony, Laurence Gilgore Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Connecticut Grand Opera and Orchestra, and Mr. Jessie Chapman Artistic, Director and Principal Conductor of the Westhill Chamber Singers, showing I can do lots of different things in the music world.

Jaime Cruz
Ocala, FL

Professional Guitarist and Instructor

I took up the guitar at the age of 14 after being inspired by my Dad’s incredible finger style guitar playing and quickly developed a love for the instrument. Being addicted to players such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Al Di Meola, Eric Johnson and Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker and Marty Friedman, Guthrie Govan, Allan Holdsworth and Michael Romeo, I initially focused on rock technique. I have always been obsessed with music and playing guitar. I studied music and the guitar in a variety of styles including jazz, rock and pop, funk, blues, latin and classical. I played throughout high school in the rock band and ensemble performance group and developed a strong repertoire and love for all styles of music. I joined the United State Army Band and at the same time served my country while playing guitar. 20 years of service in the United States Army, I developed an extensive background in music performance and electric guitar instructor and work with various groups and small combos to include private parties, jazz festivals, concerts and special events of all kinds; Concert Band, Rock Band, Dixie Band and latin Band. I also had toured and performed around the world, such places as; the London Beating Retreat Tattoo, Italy Embassy, Bremen Marching Tattoo, Basel, Switzerland, Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland, Soul Arts Center in Soul Korea, Virginia International Tattoo, San Antonio Fiesta parade in San Antonio Texas and The Battle Ship Missouri Memorial, Hawaii. I taught numerous musicians and led thousands of instructional rehearsals to prepare musicians for performances. I'm passionate for the guitar and love to perform and teach.

Inspiring Guitar Lessons with a talented, versatile Guitarist, CU Alumna, and devoted music nerd

I am a true music nerd, and I teach guitar in a variety of diverse styles such as Rock, Jazz, Blues, Pop, and Latin/Bossa Nova. I have been playing music for over 20 years and have performed at local clubs, concert halls, and private events. I studied Guitar Performance at the University of Colorado with an emphasis on Popular and Jazz styles, and I have a Classical background on the Piano (training under the esteemed Suzuki Method). I have a deep appreciation for many musical styles and love sharing this passion with my students! My own outstanding teachers have inspired me to become an educator myself and pass along some key wisdom and musical tools. I am committed to developing your musicianship, but I also want us to be able to laugh at our mistakes, have fun, not take our egos so seriously, and cultivate a sense of humanity through music. Similarly, while there is absolutely a place for traditional music fundamentals, there is an equally important place for creative expression and imagination. In your guitar lessons with me, I will simplify difficult musical material for you and introduce you to new concepts in a non-intimidating way. We will also work on training your EARS so that you can better hear melodies, chords, rhythms – one of the most crucial aspects of musical learning. I hope to boost your self-confidence by fostering your strengths and showing you how to tackle your weaknesses. Finally, I would love to help you craft your OWN distinctive style and standout musical identity while you have fun exploring the guitar!
